Making Headway

Well, the studio is as 'done' as any work in progress ever is, I have 8 complete songs and 3 or 4 that either will be finished or scrapped for something better. I have recorded 9 demos w/ just guitar (keyboard on one) and vocals -- occasionally BVs just because it's so frickin' tempting sometimes. The demos are for me to think about arrangements, harmonies and instrumentation. Also possible possibly slight lyrical changes.

The main thing is we're on a steady course, so if I can manage to finish 4-5 more songs I can start really recording soon!

Here Comes My Inspiration!

It's funny a and wonderful feeling when your brain finally figures out that you're on a mission and starts to tune in for you. Writers of all sorts get this, as I imagine other types of artist do as well.
Yesterday one of my co-workers bought a powder blue sweatshirt. That's all it took. My brain said "Powder Blue... That's a great name for a song!" I could even hear a little bit of the Badfingerish melody coming through. I didn't even jot down the word as I usually do,  trusting that it was a strong enough idea for me to remember and it was. Last night as the kids were getting ready for bed I grabbed my guitar and away it went. The lyrics aren't perfect. I'll probably change it a little here and there, but it's pretty much a full blown song already. I taped a quick demo so I could try out some harmonies and they sounded pretty good too. As far as what the songs actually about, your guess is good as mine:

Powder blue, your eyes light up the sky in powder blue.
Yes it true, you can't cradle a goodbye, yes it's true.

But if you care for my endless presence,
Then I'm there for a day of pleasence
Not a gray sky, or a tear's ache
per chance to pass by
your golden cheesecake
in the sun..

Looking Good!

You know, when I lay everything out linearally, It doesn't look too bad. I have 7 songs near completion. That's over 3/4 of my 12-13 song goal.

I do need to start at least 4 more songs, which in way sounds like fun. I can look at whatI have so far and decide, oh I need a couple more uptempo (or upbeat) tunes. Or I maybe I need to balance the guitar songs with a couple more piano ones. Mmm...Maybe should I try my hand at a dulcimer derived song?

One nice thing about working on several songs at once is that if i get stuck or bored with one, I can quickly move to another with a somewhatfresher  approach.

What a mess

Will this song ever be done? I've got all these scraps of lines and I'm trying hard to hang on to a thread of an idea. Sometimes knowing what a song's about is a curse.
